GISAID Support Indonesia to Develop Genomic Data
November 28, 2023
Indonesia’s Ministry of Health and the GISAID Initiative, the world’s leading data science initiative platform, today announced the establishment of the GISAID Academy at Kura Kura Bali. With the establishment of a permanent faculty in Bali, GISAID consolidates its educational programs, drawing on its rich experience in training hundreds of professionals in bioinformatics across the globe who played decisive roles from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The GISAID Academy will further advance genomic surveillance while building response capacity in the region, and beyond.
“With the establishment of the GISAID Academy, Indonesia continues to build up resilience and outbreak response by leveraging its existing health ecosystem. Utilizing established facilities at Poltekkes Kemenkes Denpasar and Universitas Udayana, the Academy is poised to deliver end-to-end vocational training in pathogen genomic surveillance,” said Indonesia’s Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin. “This affirms our contribution to global health security following our 2022 G20 Presidency, and ASEAN Chairmanship this year. Furthermore, the GISAID Academy paves the way for greater multi-sector involvement and opportunities for growth in the field of genomics, including its wider application in precision medicine.”
“The GISAID Academy introduces a meticulously crafted year-round curriculum, with courses ranging from vocational training on foundational PCR techniques to Next Generation Sequencing to prepare for the advanced bioinformatics training. This underscores GISAID’s commitment to high-quality genomic data that advances life-saving countermeasures and evidence based policymaking decisions. The continuous learning and collaborative model position the GISAID Academy as a vital international resource, emphasizing equitable access to scientific knowledge built on a foundation of transparent sharing of data,” said GISAID’s President, Peter Bogner
The GISAID Academy will be hosted within the United In Diversity (UID) Campus at Kura Kura Bali. Inspired by the Balinese tradition of Tri Hita Karana, the UID Bali campus celebrates harmony by featuring state-of-the-art learning facilities within an idyllic setting.
“Together with UID’s mission of ‘Building Trust for Our Common Future,’ the GISAID Academy pays homage to the principle of data sovereignty and the pledge made by its user community to uphold equitable access to technology and knowledge, premised on scientific etiquette and respect for all rights and interests,” said UID’s Honorary President, Sir Gordon William Duff.
